Traffic Safety Grants

The Illinois Department of Transportation's Bureau of Safety Programs and Engineering (BSPE) acts as the state's Highway Safety Office. Federal funding supports hundreds of local agencies in their efforts to reduce injuries and fatalities associated with traffic crashes.

Grants are administered according to the Federal Fiscal Year (FFY) and operate from October 1 to September 30. Grant applications for FFY18 will be available February 24, 2017, and are due by COB April 10, 2017.

Highway Safety Grants available in FFY18 include:

  • Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program/Enforcement Local Alcohol Program (STEP/eLAP)
  • Local Alcohol Program (LAP)
  • Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Program
  • Regional Traffic Safety Resource Center (RTSRC) Program
  • Injury Prevention (IP) Program
  • Traffic Records (TR) Program

Significant changes have been made to the grant application process for FFY18. The Grant Accountability and Transparency Act (GATA) requires pre-registration and detailed administrative work. If you plan to apply for a grant in FFY18, we highly recommend coordinating with your agency/municipality's fiscal office. Visit trafficsafetygrantsillinois.org for more details.
